Toelichtingen

Tobias Schneid - The lonely monk's reflections on reprocreational aspects in fractal organisations II

Marshall Leo Gambetti: "Schneid is a loner, keeping away from aesthetic oneway composition cliques, living and working since his teenage years in an tensional area of extremely different musical aspects and influences. His activities in advanced jazz musics crash on influences by modern avantgarde music, maybe mixed with rock-music elements, and thus creat a extremely individual musical shizophrenia, which - since his muiscal theatre swin swin (1999) - is basic element of his compositional work.

Musical material therewith always is disparate, does not exclude (aesthetic) contrasts, but comments, completes and counterpoints them, and thus builds up its own individual semantics.

It is not about quoting or collage, it is not polystilistic, rather it is an aim, to - despite all breaks - combine these diverging levels of speech to a conclusive musical message.

Composing as self therapy - measure a torn individual takes trying to understand himself.

In that sense, the title's allusions on the jazz composer Thelonius Monk and/or fractal geometry are not material-based hints to the music, but metaphors for seemingly conflicting positions, which - despite their contraries - build up an integral WHOLE."

Rozalie Hirs - a-book-of-light - 15'

Rozalie Hirs: "a-book-of-light is music for a light-bulb being lit in slow-motion. One single moment of setting a coil of electric wire on fire in a dome of glass is magnified to 15 minutes. The lighting takes place in four stages: flashes, uncontrolled motion, stationary state and steady state. During the steady state the light unfolds its unequally tempered nature.

a-book-of-light deals with the idealized concept of the harmonic series. This is a fundamental frequency with its harmonic partials, the series of frequencies that are integer multiples of the fundamental frequency. One harmonic series on 2.05 Hz and numerous harmonic series on each of its partials form the basic material of a-book-of-light. It is translated into a score to be played by the 11 musicians and furthermore synthesized into sound to be projected over speakers. The translation was done with help of OpenMusic software. The sound synthesis took place in Csound using an OM Chroma interface. The sound projection is done live on stage by Max/ Msp."

Samuel Vriezen - Krise - 15'

     The crisis has just passed.
Uh oh, here it comes again,
looking for someone to blame itself on, you, I...

     John Ashbery, from Lauging Gravy

Samuel Vriezen: "Krise is a crisis of the tone A flat that sometimes subsides but never passes.

I wrote the piece thinking of reaction processes in music. For some reason, I came across this theme many times over the past year, most importantly by performing Christian Wolff's For One, Two or Three People with Ensemble Jubelpark (an Amsterdam based experimental improvisation percussion duo consisting of Gerben Bisschop and Bas Geerts.)

Furthermore, I wanted to write a piece for more or less any chamber ensemble, similar to Cage's Music For... cycle, so that I could boast to my friends that I wouldn't need to write more because I would already have written all pieces. Krise has twelve parts, and you can play any three or more of them. The more people play, the less is played by each performer individually. Thus, Krise is a realization of an old desire of mine: to write a piece that is bigger than any performance of it, just like the world is bigger than anybody in it.

For those listeners who like follow where they are in the piece: Krise is in 12 sections. Most of these are organised in exactly the same way: chance-determined subsets of the whole ensemble play their material and react to each other. Section III and Section X are tutti: III has crescendo/diminuendo structures in all parts, and X is very soft."

Carl Christian Bettendorf - Perpetuum - 7'

Carl Christian Bettendorf: "The title refers only to the manner of the composition: two elements are developed continuously, a modal, jazzy melody and its fundamental. After an ascent ending in a general pause, the 'perpetuating' is suddenly no longer possible: the melody degenerates, the rhythmical continuum tries but fails to get going again - and the fundamental 'e', too, sighs out its life..."

Verdwijnen, nieuw ontstaan. Kringloop."

Laughing Gravy

The crisis has just passed.
Uh oh, here it comes again,
looking for someone to blame itself on, you, I...

All these people coming in...
The last time we necked
I noticed this lobe on your ear.
Please, tell me we may begin.

All the wolves in the wolf factory paused
at noon, for a moment of silence.
