Concerten Tot en Met
is a platform for new music by young people in the
Netherlands. It was founded in 1997 by a group of composers who were
studying at various institutions in the Netherlands or had just finished
their studies; though centered around Amsterdam, the group has always been
open to composers of very diverse nationalities and musical backgrounds.
Some composers may have PhDs from American universities, others may have a
background in jazz and in electro-acoustic installations.
During the past years, Concerten Tot en Met has proven to be a successful
platform for compositional cultural exchange, for presenting new works and
young composers to the audience, for experimentation with concert forms
(past concerts have included multi-media events but also music for
schoolchildren), for bringing about contacts between young composers and
talented interpreters of contemporary music and for generally enlivening
Dutch music life.
Musicians appearing in Concerten Tot en Met hail from many different
backgrounds, including Carl Rosman, Patricia Greene, Helen Bledsoe, the
Zephyr Quartet, Daniel Rowland and Bernd Brackman, Het Amsterdams Kwintet
and Ensemble Insomnio.
Concerten Tot en Met has collaborated fruitfully with organisations such as
Gaudeamus, Karnatic Lab, the Netherlands-America Foundation, the Utrecht
Composers Collective and the Amsterdam Grachten Festival. Concerten Tot en
Met usually presents its concerts in the Posthoorn Church in Amsterdam with
some concerts taking place in larger venues such as Felix Meritis.
Recordings of concerts at Concerten Tot en Met have been broadcast many
times on the Dutch national radio as well as in the United States.
Concerten Tot en Met has been subsidized in the past by the Prince Bernhard
Fund and the Netherlands-America Foundation; the 2001-2002 season will be
run on a grant from the Amsterdam Arts Fund.
